About us

president and founder

Cyril Chavis, Jr.

Rev. Chavis is from Virginia Beach, VA. He is an alum of the University of Virginia, earning a B.A. in Religious Studies in 2013, and is an alum of Reformed Theological Seminary in Jackson, earning an MDIV with a Biblical Exegesis emphasis in 2017. Doing campus ministry on HBCUs since 2014, Cyril is a pastor who is passionate about reaching Black Gen Z, serving as an RUF campus pastor at Jackson State University and now serving Howard University. While pastoring, Cyril founded Hidase Publishing in order to address the African experience – diaspora and continent – from the rich resources of the Christian faith. When he is not pastoring or writing, he is probably laughing way too hard with friends; goofing off with his wife, Jenell, and his two daughters; or dreaming about how things could be.

Publishing

We love books! Why? Hidase believes knowledge is a key piece in the journey towards African renewal. Equipped with this conviction, we are an indie publisher that addresses a unique audience from a Christian perspective.

What we write about

Our Story

Cyril, burdened by the lack of publishers combining a love for Jesus and a love for Africana, founded Hidase (ሕዳሴ) Publishing in 2021. We are a Black owned business creating content to contribute to African renewal everywhere, everyway. Our books are mostly written at the popular level, and black African Christians assess, edit, and profit from our products. We equip ministry leaders, Christians, and spiritual seekers with the knowledge needed to see the kingdom of God renew their churches and communities.
